We made our final trip to Athlone on Saturday as the All Ireland Indoor championships came to a close with an exciting day of relay competition. And our teams didn’t disappoint with a clutch of fine performances and a silver medal for our girls U15 team led home by Robyn O’Brien.
Our U12 Girls (Kate Cowman, Maria Coffey, Laura Gallagher and Emma O’Brien) got their first taste of competition at this level and whilst they didn’t progress beyond the heats it was great experience for them and I am sure there will be many more opportunities for them.
Our U13 boys and U14 girls were up against very strong competition and found the going tough on the day. However it has been a fine few weeks for these teams who lined out as follows:
Cianan Martin, Evan Walshe, Dara Purcelland Pappy Tucker in the boys U13.
Julie Ringrose, Sinead O’Shea, Sarah O’Dea, Sarah Healy and Anna Dignam in the girls U14.
Our U13 girls had a fine morning when qualifying for the final with a team PB of 56.54 and performed even better in the final with a slightly better time of 56.22 and finishing in 5th place. They had the consolation of finishing at the top Dublin team and well done on two fine races. The squad was Caroline Kinnane, Emma O’Brien, Ellen Cheung, Laura Gallagher and Kristina O’Connor.
Our U15 girls were up against it having qualified as the fourth fastest team. The final was a pulsating affair with Munster teams stacking well through the early stages of the race. Holding our position in joint fourth on the last changeover, Robyn O’Brien ran a tremendous last leg picking off the teams in third and fourth before storming down the home stretch for second place. It was a great performance. The squad was Ellie Fitzgerald, Nicole Gallagher, Sarah Healy, Natasha Twomey and Robyn O’Brien. Well done girls.
