Pairs Competition (report courtesy of Valerie O’Brien):
The Under 11’s were out in force on Saturday in Irishtown. Despite the horrendous conditions they all showed great resilience and battled the elements to secure a total of 8 Gold Medals and 10 Silver Medals. We had a total of 12 girls paired and 10 boys paired competing across 60metres, 600 metres, Turbo Javelin and Long Jump.
The day started with the boys 60 metres and Jack Muslow and Donnacha Barry were unlucky not to medal in the boys 6o metres finishing first and second in their heat. James Browne and Ben McClenaghan also ran out a strong race.
The girls also ran superbly in the 60 metres – Phillipa Kickman & Francesca Comer, Sophie Curtin & Olivia Gaughran, Julia White and Judi Abu Shanab and Roisin Treacy and Elsa Mooney.
The boys 600 metres was a straight final and David Quinn recovering from a virus put in a super performance with Ben Mc Clenaghan. 600 metres a tough distance in the torrential rain!
The girls 600m pairs all put in really strong performances in what is proving to be a very popular distance with the girls. We had 3 pairs competing. Holly and Rachel ran out fast and strong to come in 1st and 2nd in their heat. They were followed by Olivia and Abbie, who running as a pair for the first time, put in a brave performance coming from behind in the home stretch to take 1st and 2nd in their heat. Julia and Sophie – both new to 600metres- also put in great performances. Holly and Rachel saw their effort rewarded with a silver medal and Abbie and Olivia were unlucky, losing out by 2 seconds to finish 4th.
The boys really shone in the field events with David McMahon and James Browne taking gold in the long jump. Followed very closely behind by Jack Muslow and Donnacha Barry taking silver in same event. Mark Fitzgerald and Killian Thornton, Tom McAleesce and Jack McKinney also competed in the long jump.
It was also 1 and 2 for Blackrock AC in the boys Turbo Javelin. David McMahon partnered with the Turbo Javelin master Mark Fitzgerald to secure gold. With Killian Thornton and David Quinn winning silver.
Blackrock Girls followed in the footsteps of the boys secured silver in the girls Turbo Javelin. Well done Julia Holmes and Elsa Mooney. Two new comers to the Javelin but both great throwers.
Blackrock girls were unlucky not to the medal in the long jump with Francesca Comer and Philippa Kickman just edged out of third. Holly O’Brien and Julia Holmes, Abbie O’Connor and Rachel O’Brien and Judi Abu Shanab and Roisin Treacy also competing.
The day finished with the relays. In the boys we saw 2 Blackrock relay teams competing for a medal with the team of Jack Muslow, Donnacha Barry, James Browne and David McMahon running a super race to finish first and securing gold.
We had three girls teams in the relay heats. Two of the BAC teams made it to the final. The girls relay team of Olivia Gaughran, Holly O’Brien, Francesca Comer and Abbie O’Connor ran a super final to clinch silver medal position in a very tight finish!
Despite the weather, there were some great, gutsy performances from the Blackrock Under11s and while there were some tears, there were also plenty of smiles too
Well done to everyone that competed -you are all champions!
