The weather is getting (slightly) better, the evenings brighter and the runs that small bit longer. We are delighted to share our May Highlights 2022 as it was another good month for the club and its members.
Highlight of the Month: 80 Marathons for Blackrock A.C. member Bryan Sheils
Unbelievable, but true. Blackrock A.C. member Bryan completed his 80th Marathon in Howth this month. To celebrate Bryan wrote a short race report for us and reflected on his latest milestone run:
‘I was delighted to be able to run my 80th marathon in Howth last Saturday. The 4 laps with rolling hills whilst challenging reward you with spectacular views across Dublin bay after reaching Howth summit (taking in Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire at the same time). It always is a great lift when you get a “Go Blackrock” shout out from passing cyclists who have ventured over from the Southside…and of course our own Gerry Flaherty and Charlene who, after completing the Half Marathon, stopped to give me every runners best friend – “salt tablets”. I always remember some marathon runners who l ran with around Howth and that are no longer with us, notably the great Paddy Hooper, Olympian and Raheny 5 race director. As Thin Lizzy is always on my playlist on the last lap l dropped into St Fintan’s cemetery to visit the grave of Phil Lynott, my boyhood music hero, and topped up the water bottle from the graveyard tap!!’

A number of Blackrock A.C. runners entered the Barrow Line 30 mile race on Saturday, 21st May 2022. Valeria Sofia took part in her first ever ultramarathon (50.5km from Tullamore to Robertstown) and we were delighted to hear she was second lady overall. Following another recent win, Ted Burke was the first male overall in 4.10, a wonderful achievement. James Dowling also ran well in his latest ultramarathon, a few weeks after the Limerick marathon. Thanks also to Pat, who was great support and cameraman on the day.

Seven Sisters Skyline Ultra
Eoghan Hughes ran the Seven Sisters 55km Ultra, ascending 4,000 meters in the process. Eoghan told us “the elevation was brutal, it felt like the whole thing was uphill and the Miners Path was almost scary, you wouldn’t want to be afraid of heights.”
